Abstract

Across the world, conflicts, climate-related disasters, and the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 (especially impacts such as rising poverty, income shocks, and school dropout trends) are leading to increased drivers of early marriage.

According to a new UNICEF report, it wasn mentioned that despite a steady decline in child marriages over the past decade, current challenges, including ongoing conflicts, climate crises and the ongoing impact of COVID-19, are threatening these problems (UNICEF, 2023).

“Across the world, crises are robbing vulnerable children of hope and destroying their dreams, especially girls who should be students, not brides,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “Health and economic crises, escalating armed conflict and the devastating effects of climate change are pushing families seeking solutions to these crises toward the wrong path of child marriage. In this context, we must do everything we can to ensure girls’ rights to education, empowerment and life,” she said (UNICEF, 2023).
