Brown Forest soils (Dystric – Eutric Cambisols) are widely distributed, occurring from the boreal to the tropical climate zone. In Bulgaria, they occupy extensive territories in the mountainous part of the country from 500 - 600 to about 1800 m above sea level. The paper presents the results of a study on Brown Forest soils (Dystric-Eutric Cambisols) in the Western Rhodopes region, Bulgaria. They are found in the Middle Forest Vegetation zone of the Thracian Forest Vegetation area in Southern Bulgaria. The depth of the studied brown forest soils (Dystric-Eutric Cambisols), their reaction (pH), humus and nitrogen content, as well as the light soil texture fully meet the ecological requirements of most coniferous tree species. Values of the C/N ratio are indicative of the relatively low rate of mineralization of organic matter
