The Influence of Psychological and Motivational Factors of Academic Dishonesty on High-Achieving Students
Abstract
This study investigates how academic dishonesty influences the emotional well-being and motivation of high-achieving university students. Drawing on psychological and motivational theories, the research explores the effects of perceived unfairness, anxiety, and decreased intrinsic motivation resulting from exposure to dishonest behaviour among peers. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study examines students’ emotional responses, levels of academic confidence, and perceptions of integrity within the learning environment. The findings highlight that high-achieving students are particularly sensitive to violations of academic fairness, which can diminish trust, increase stress, and lower motivation to excel. The study concludes that promoting transparency, ethical dialogue, and supportive learning environments is essential for reducing the negative impact of academic dishonesty on high-performing students.
