Background: The rapid digitalization of Kazakhstan’s economy has accelerated the expansion of the digital media sector, characterized by high levels of uncertainty, creative variability, and continuously evolving stakeholder requirements. These conditions challenge the applicability of traditional project management approaches and highlight the need for more flexible and adaptive methods. Despite the extensive application of Agile methodologies in the IT sector, limited empirical evidence exists regarding their effectiveness in digital media production, particularly within emerging markets such as Kazakhstan.
Methods: This study employs a comparative mixed-method research design grounded in contingency theory and dynamic capabilities theory. Empirical data were collected through a structured survey of digital media professionals in Kazakhstan, complemented by qualitative analysis of project management practices. Project effectiveness was evaluated using five key criteria: time efficiency, product quality, adaptability, team productivity, and stakeholder satisfaction.
Results: The findings demonstrate that Agile-based and hybrid project management approaches significantly outperform traditional linear models in terms of adaptability, team performance, and responsiveness to stakeholder needs. However, these approaches exhibit moderate limitations in cost predictability. The results indicate that the effectiveness of project management methods is strongly influenced by the level of environmental uncertainty and the creative intensity of digital media projects.
Conclusions: The study concludes that Agile and hybrid approaches are more suitable for managing digital media production projects in Kazakhstan. It contributes to the existing literature by providing context-specific empirical evidence and proposes a framework for aligning project management methods with the characteristics of creative industries in emerging economies. The findings offer practical implications for improving project performance and supporting innovation-driven and sustainable business development.
