Abstract

Mockumentary is a cinematic genre that’s been underestimated for a long time due to its mixed and unclear concept, which composes documentary and fiction filmmaking. This article explores the key features, narrative techniques, and structural principles of the “mockumentary” genre. Moreover it analyzes its relevance in the context of the fast development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Drawing on theoretical frameworks by Yuri Lotman and Michel Foucault, as well as comparative analysis of films such as Triumph of the Will and Man Bites Dog, this study explores how the concepts of truth and authenticity are constructed and consumed in the media.
This research uses techniques like bibliographic analysis, case studies, internet research, and narrative analysis to study both documentary and mockumentary films. It argues that documentary images are not unquestionably reliable, but are shaped by cultural context, the filmmaker’s intent, and cinematic techniques. In turn, the “mockumentary” exposes these mechanisms and critically reflects on them, imitating the form of documentary film while presenting fictional content, thereby provoking viewers to reflect on the boundaries between reality and fiction.
The article draws parallels between mockumentaries and AI-generated media content, highlighting their shared ability to mimic reality and obscure underlying ideological frameworks. The study positions mockumentaries as an important tool for analyzing and deconstructing both traditional documentary practices and AI-driven media. In conclusion, it is argued that in the age of post-truth and digital disinformation, mockumentary film continues to hold a significant cultural and theoretical value as a form of reflective criticism.
