ELISION OF CONSONANT PHONEMES IN ENGLISH
Keywords:
elision, consonants, plosives, reduction, pronunciationAbstract
Words that are pronounced in isolation differ from the pronunciation of those same words in a sentence depending on speech rate, whether they are used in stressed or unstressed positions, the degree to which they undergo reduction, and even on who is speaking. It should be noted that when words are pronounced outside a phonetic context, they are heard in an ideal form in accordance with phonetic transcription; however, in the flow of connected speech we can hear altered and reduced pronunciation variants. To a certain extent, sounds influence one another during the speech process. In this regard, the influence of vowel phonemes on consonants, consonants on vowels, and consonants on one another gives rise to a number of phonetic processes in speech. These processes include elision, assimilation, accommodation, and reduction
