Abstract

This article explores the depiction of the Huns in medieval European literature, focusing on their portrayal within various epic narratives. Unlike traditional historiographical accounts that often depict the Huns in a purely negative light, this examination delves into the nuances of their representation in European epic literature, highlighting the complexity of their roles and the varied narrative functions they serve. Through a literary and folkloric lens, this paper aims to unpack the cultural and historical underpinnings that shaped the European perception of the Huns during the medieval period.

Introduction: The Huns, a group of Eurasian nomads, have historically been portrayed as a fearsome force in European historical texts. However, their depiction in medieval epics often transcends the simplistic binary of friend or foe. This article seeks to analyze the portrayal of the Huns within the context of medieval European literature, exploring how these narratives reflect broader societal attitudes and the potential influence of folklore on these portrayals.

Literary Review: A review of the scholarly work on the Huns' portrayal in medieval literature reveals a range of perspectives. Key sources include The song of the Nibelungs, where the Huns, under King Etzel (Attila), play pivotal roles that are both antagonistic and complex, and various chronicles and sagas from the period that mention the Huns in various capacities.

Methodology: This study employs a qualitative analysis of selected medieval epics and literary texts from Europe that feature the Huns. Textual analysis is used to identify themes and narrative structures, while historical contextualization helps link these findings to broader historical narratives and folklore influences.
