STRATEGIES FOR OVERCOMING TERMINOLOGICAL CHALLENGES IN SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION FROM ENGLISH INTO KAZAKH: THE EXPERIENCE OF THE DIGITAL ALMATY 2025 FORUM
Abstract
This research article is dedicated to a comprehensive study of the terminological and cognitive challenges that arise during the simultaneous interpretation of high-density technological discourse from English into Kazakh. The empirical basis of the study comprises professional simultaneous interpretation recordings from the international forum "Digital Almaty 2025". Selected via purposive sampling, the audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and subjected to qualitative thematic analysis based on D. Gile's "Effort Model" and A. Chesterman's taxonomy of translation strategies. The findings demonstrate that interpreters frequently resort to pragmatic omission and paraphrasing to overcome terminological overload. Furthermore, the study reveals that translingual phenomena, such as code-switching and syntactic calques resulting from Kazakh-Russian language contact, serve as cognitive "lifesavers" during extreme informational density. Ultimately, this research underscores the intricate balance between cognitive capacity, linguistic resource availability, and strategic decision-making in the highly specialized environment of simultaneous interpretation.
