CONTEXTUAL APPROACH TO TEACHING PROFESSIONAL VOCABULARY
Abstract
In the modern world, when international relations are becoming more and more profound, and integration in business and professional activities is becoming increasingly important, knowledge of professional vocabulary becomes an integral component of a successful career. Mastering foreign languages and unusual communication skills has a great advantage. Undoubtedly, it is possible to master the basics of grammar and vocabulary, but for the full use of the language in a specific professional field requires mastery of specialized terminology and the ability to apply it in the context of real tasks.
One of the approaches that can help in mastering professional vocabulary is a contextual approach to teaching. This approach is based on providing language materials and assignments that are directly related to real professional situations. Instead of studying individual words and phrases, students study the language in the context of its application in a work environment.
The contextual approach is based on studying professional vocabulary in the context of its usage. Instead of studying individual words, students can focus on working with real materials such as texts, articles, instructions or videos that reflect professional activities. During the text analysis, students can highlight unfamiliar words and expressions, use contextual clues to understand their meaning, and practice actively using new vocabulary.
According to the «Newest Philosophical Dictionary», the concept of context (from the Latin «contextus» meaning connection, close connection) is described as a quasi-textual phenomenon generated by the effect of the systematic nature of the text as an expressive-semantic integrity. It consists of the super-additivity of the meaning and value of the text in relation to the meaning and value of the sum of its linguistic units [1].
