COOPERATION BETWEEN THE REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN AND ASEAN: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS

The article examines the place and role of one of the most authoritative regional institution of the Asian-Pacific region, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, in the foreign policy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The attempts of the Republic of Kazakhstan to join the ASEAN Regional Forum have been analyzed, and the causes that hinder Kazakhstan’s accession in the forum have been discussed. Further, author concludes that the main reasons impeding the cooperation between the association and the Republic of Kazakhstan are the geographical remoteness of the regions and slow process of the development of the relations with the ASEAN member states. Besides existing obstacles on the way of cooperation, there is a number of promising areas where the integration is expected to be successful.
