The Role of Motivation in Language Learning
Abstract
Motivation plays a significant role in language learning, as it influences learners' engagement, effort, and persistence in their language acquisition process. According to Dörnyei (1994), motivation can be defined as "the driving force that initiates and sustains behavior." In the context of language learning, it refers to the intrinsic or extrinsic factors that stimulate individuals to engage actively in learning a new language. Understanding the role of motivation in language learning is crucial for language educators to design effective teaching strategies that enhance learners' motivation and facilitate their language acquisition.Language learning is a vital skill in today's globalized world. By acquiring a second language, individuals can enhance their communication abilities and expand their career prospects (Cook, 2016). Language learning is also a means of promoting cultural understanding and the development of international relations. It allows people to connect with people from different cultures and appreciate their customs and traditions, promoting tolerance and empathy. Additionally, learning a new language has cognitive benefits, stimulating brain activity and improving memory and problem-solving skills (Cook, 2016). Therefore, language learning plays a crucial role in personal, professional, and social development.
