Abstract

This study focuses on the advantages and limitations of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching English. In recent years, AI technologies have been increasingly applied in education to support teaching and learning. AI provides many tools, such as chatbots, language learning apps, and intelligent tutoring systems, which can improve students’ learning experience. One of the main advantages of AI is personalization. AI programs can adapt lessons to each student’s level, giving them exercises that suit their abilities. This helps students learn grammar, vocabulary, reading, and speaking skills more effectively.  AI also delivers immediate feedback, enabling learners to identify and correct mistakes right away. This is especially valuable for developing writing and speaking abilities. Additionally, AI helps teachers reduce the time spent on routine tasks such as checking assignments or creating worksheets, allowing them to concentrate more on teaching, supporting students, and offering meaningful guidance. Another advantage is that AI can make lessons more dynamic and interactive through games, digital quizzes, and simulated conversations, which increases students’ motivation and engagement. However, there are limitations to using AI in English teaching. Some students may become too dependent on technology and spend less time practicing real communication skills. Not all students have equal access to devices or stable internet, which can create gaps in learning opportunities. Moreover, AI systems cannot fully understand emotions, culture, or context, which are very important in learning a language. Sometimes, AI feedback may be too rigid or fail to recognize nuanced language use, idioms, or expressions. Another important consideration is ethics. Using AI involves handling personal data, which raises privacy concerns. There is also the risk of bias in AI algorithms, which may affect how students are assessed or what content they receive. Therefore, while AI provides many opportunities for learning, its use should be balanced and carefully monitored by teachers. In conclusion, AI has great potential in English education. It can make learning more personalized, interactive, and efficient, while also supporting teachers in their work. However, it cannot completely replace human teachers, who are essential for guidance, cultural understanding, and emotional support. The most effective approach is to combine AI tools with traditional teaching methods to create a well-rounded and meaningful learning experience for all students.
