Abstract

As with all polymeric materials, polyethylene loses its functional properties after a certain period of use and becomes waste. The degradation of polyethylene is caused by environmental factors and various processes occurring under operational conditions. For instance, oxidation processes occur in the polymer under the influence of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This oxidation results in the formation of carbonyl, hydroxyl, and acid groups, leading to a decline in quality. Another critical process is the cleavage of polymer chains. Chain scission reduces the average molecular weight, which ultimately results in the loss of mechanical properties. Furthermore, the material suffers a reduction in tensile strength and elongation at break. These changes cause the polymer to become brittle and less durable over time. The loss of initial properties transforms polyethylene into waste. Given its extensive range of applications, polyethylene waste constitutes a significant portion of total plastic waste
