Abstract

Walnut is a popular crop in Georgia, walnut (Uglans regia L) belongs to the walnut family (Uglans daceae lind). The plants in this family originate from the moderately warm, subtropical climates.

The Common Walnut - Uglans redia L. is a widespread and important specie. There are walnut species from the different countries in the Botanical Gardens and Parks of our country, including: J. Colifornica wafs vaz, Hindisii; U. cozdifozmis Max; j. sieboldina Max; U. nigra L; U.Cinerea L; U.mandshurica Max.

The walnut (Juglans regia) is represented in Georgia in varieties, and it is reflected in the fact that the walnut has been distributed by seeds during the centuries as a result of cross-pollination and now we have many new variations of forms. The walnut is grown in all regions in our country, at an altitude of 1300 meters above sea level. The walnut grown at an altitude of 500-1000 meters above sea level is recommended for the industrial purposes. The walnut is cultivated in Kakheti, Shida Kartli, Imereti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Racha-Lechkhumi and Svaneti Regions.

The following varieties of walnut are grown on a massive area in industrial gardens in Georgia: Chandler, Fernor, Franquette. From an industrial point of view, it is recommended to cultivate a walnut garden in Imereti, Kvemo Kartli, Samtskhe-Javakheti and Kakheti. The farmers choose weak growth lateral fruiting late-flowering high-yielding varieties, which have a high-quality indicator of fruit. High yield of fruit core, late start of vegetation, resistance to stress factors and pest-diseases are also important for the farmers. It is also important that varieties with weak growth enter fruiting earlier and reach full fruiting in 7-8 years. 90 perc ent of newly planted walnut in Georgia come from the Chandler variety.
