The 2020 has become a year of fantastic changes in Azerbaijan. The country has regained its territorial integrity, lost during the first Karabakh war with Armenia. The results of the second Karabakh war led to an unprecedented consolidation of the Azerbaijani society, capable of prompting Azerbaijan to strengthen significantly its statehood and security. Azerbaijan has strengthened its leading position in the South Caucasus region, and it is ready to create regional associations of various formats. However, the events of 2020 gave rise to new risks and challenges for Azerbaijan, which should be understood and mitigated by a well-thought-out policy already in the current 2021. By themselves, these risks are narrow-regional (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia), wide regional (with the addition of Russia, Turkey, Iran) and extra-regional (USA, EU and separately China).
